Blum Center flood expert Dr. Brett Sanders co-authored a recent article in Nature Communications  exploring a novel technique for understanding floods in cities.  The team applied a new analytical approach, borrowed from physics, to understand flood hazard variation between cities. They find that the urban form-for example the way the streets are laid out and how dense the city construction is- can have a significant impact on flood severity. Dr. Sanders suggests this modeling method will be useful for the next generation of city planners and civil engineers as they cope with changing climate and how to protect their urban areas.
