Dr. Brett Sanders, Blum Center flood expert, and his team of engineers at UCI have been featured in a recent LAist article for their work on developing an updated and more nuanced model of flood risk for Los Angeles. The model, called PRIMo-Drain, accounts for more detail and updated topology, among other things, than the existing national flood map models.  This means that there is quite a discrepancy in the projected flood risks compared to the outdated model and PRIMo-Drain is illustrating more accurate representations of where and which properties are at risk in Los Angeles from flooding. The team hopes to make the model even more specific and detailed in the future to better prepare cities at risk of flooding from multiple sources – rain, river, coast – and prevent major damage by developing suitable solutions for their location.
