Elected officials and experts recently gathered to discuss California’s beach problem – the coastline is threatened by climate change, sea level rise, and erosions. Another major factor in our coastal woes – poor infrastructure design, says Blum Center flood and erosion expert Dr. Brett Sanders. Historically, the infrastructure was designed to quickly move flood water out to sea, and it worked. But, sediment that would have naturally made it to our beaches now gets stuck up river or up channel and in dams. Sanders, as one solution to coastal erosion, advocates for rivers that naturally bring that sand to the coast again. In the absence of that, some agencies are considering partnerships to remove dredged sand from reservoirs to the beach.
