Last week, Blum Center coastal erosion and flooding expert Dr. Brett Sanders was quoted in an OC Register article covering the arrival of new sand to Dana Point, CA, beaches. The project is the culmination of years of government, researcher, and local organization efforts to protect the beach. The sand will nourish the beach, which like many beaches in southern California, has been disappearing over time. Dr. Sanders provided insight in the article as to the role of El Niño storms and how adding sand to the beach will help reduce damage from storms and waves as we expect a return of the El Niño conditions.
