Blum Center Distinguished Visiting Scholar Siddharth Kara recently published an op-ed in the Guardian titled, “I saw the unbearable grief inflicted on families by cobalt mining. I pray for change.”

The piece tells the story of some of the children and families he met during research trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He shares how children are being exploited to provide the cobalt used to make our smartphones and laptops.
