The Blum Center at UC Irvine will have the honor of hosting Dr. James Orbinski, founder of Dignitas International and former president of Doctors Without Borders, as a guest scholar. Dr. Orbinski was chosen to represent Doctors Without Borders when the organization was awarded Nobel Prize in 1999. His extraordinary service with Doctors Without Borders has brought medical leadership and relief to numerous regions, including Bosnia, Rwanda, and Somalia during times of war, genocide, and internal crises.
In 2015, the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs, together with the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation, awarded the globally recognized humanitarian with the Human Security Award. This annual award recognizes people whose actions have made a dramatic difference in helping protect and empower the world’s most vulnerable groups and communities. Currently, Dr. Orbinski is both a medicine and public science professor at the University of Toronto.
